Why Recycled Yarns?

We always mention that most of loop’ncraft yarns are made from %100 recycled cotton. Well, what does that mean? What is recycled cotton made of? Why we produce recycle cotton? How we produce our recycled cotton yarns? If you are curious about the answers of these questions this article is right for you.

The most important reasons why we produced our recycled craft yarns were that they were sustainable and that waste in the textile industry was prevented to some extent. And of course, it was both economical and sustainable in commercial terms too.

The founder of our company is a textile engineer and has gained lots of experience by working in the textile industry for many years. He observed during the years he worked that the production surpluses of fabrics were considered as waste material and throwed away. Although these products are named as waste, they are actually top-quality products. These are the parts of left over from high quality fabrics used by giant textile factories in ready-to-wear production.

Later, he learns that these wastes can be recycled and turned back into cotton yarn. So our recycle yarn production adventure is started. Since 2008 we are recycling textile wastes into specific yarns.

With the motto “give waste a second life”, we ensure the reuse of waste textile materials. We prevent these products from polluting nature by throwing them away and we also ensure that tons of water are saved in cotton production. Also in the process of dyeing cotton fabrics tons of water is wasted. By recycling and producing our yarns we don’t apply any chemical dyeing process. So we contribute greatly to our nature and to the protection of world resources. According to our research 1 kg of recycled yarn saves 10.800 liters of water and 1,3m² land. We aim to contribute to the environment and to minimize our carbon footprint as best as we can.

How is recycled cotton yarns produced?

Our operations are based on collecting, sorting and recycling the left over fabrics from textile industry into several types of products. Ertek Textile company processes about 6.500.000 kg of textile waste. We start by collecting waste fabrics from the world's leading companies producing ready-to-wear clothing. Designs of the new season, which are determined by the models, are cut out of the fabrics and the production surplus of these cut fabrics is the raw material of our products. These wastes and production surpluses coming to our factory are evaluated and sorted out if they are suitable for our products by our experienced team. For the next stage, separations are made according to quality and fabric type. The collected products are divided into 4 main product groups: fabrics suitable for sewing, fabrics for cleaning rags, selvedge waste fabrics and the rest.

Fabrics reserved for Cleaning Rags are cut and pressed and made ready for sale. Selvedge wastes of drying processes of fabrics which is the raw material of our T-shirt yarn, are sent to pre-winding process. After this step they are coiled, labeled and ready for sale. The fabric remnants suitable for sewing are selected and made ready for sewing again. The rest of the fabrics, called cotton hosiery clips, goes to tearing machines which is used for producing recycled fibers. This regenarated yarns are subjected to all folding or knitting processes in order to obtain our hobby and handcraft yarns.
